Aluminum Panel Prep - Tips for Proper Adhesion

August 6, 2015

Welcome back! Pete had a great July vacaion and is ready, once again, to talk paint!

Aluminum has been around for quite some time but with the increased usage from many OE manufacturers, aluminum has become the new buzz word. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind to insure proper adhesion when performing aluminum repair.

Aluminum Oxidation. Aluminum can oxidize very quickly after being sanded and exposed to air. This can have a negative impact on the ability of a primer to bond to the aluminum. Therefore, it is critical to prime sanded aluminum panels as soon as possible to protect it from oxidation.

Avoid cross contamination. Galvanic corrosion will occur when you first sand a steel panel and then use that same sanding disc to sand aluminum. By cross contaminating these metals, the aluminum will corrode and cause the primer to lose adhesion. Therefore it is important to keep sanding discs for aluminum separate from sanding discs used for steel repair.

By practicing these simple tips, you can rest assured your paint job will be sound over properly prepared aluminum.

Historic Color Formulas

June 2015

>Why Do Color Formulations Go Historic?

This has been an “age old” question.

What are historic formulas?

Historic formulas are available for colors that have a new revised formula. The “Historic” formula is the previous formula that was matched. Not all colors have historic formulas.

How will I know when a historic color is available?

There are some instances when a color contains a toner that is obsolete and the color was unable to be re-matched. Users may receive a comment, “No Record Found”. Contact the Color Library for help in those situations.

It's vacation time!!!

Pete’s taking a summer break to enjoy the sun, sand, and beach air.

Did You Know That Size Matters When it Comes to Etch Primers

June 2015

Etch primers are a key component when preparing bare metal substrates for paint. Not only do they promote adhesion between the bare metal and the subsequent layer of high-build surfacer, but they also provide a layer of corrosion resistance. Also, depending on the size of your repair area, your choice of PPG etch primer will be different.

ONECHOICE® SXA1031 Etch Prime – Gray is a chrome-free, aerosol etch primer ideal for the small, bare metal spots, such as scratches, cut-throughs, and hard to reach areas. Use only on small areas such as these.

OneChoice SX1071 ECOBASE™ 5.5 Etch Prime is ideal for larger areas. It is a chrome-free, 2 component etch primer that is fast drying and compliant for all markets. SX1071 is best to use on large, bare metal areas such as panels that have been stripped or when preparing new un-primed parts for paint.

Large or small, PPG has you covered when it comes to painting bare metal!

What does the "Plus" mean in the OMNI™ Plus basecoat system?

The “Plus” basecoat systems – OMNI Plus MBP/MBPX - offer high strength toners that deliver improved coverage and durability as well as fast dry times. Tri-coats and unique pigments are also part of the platform which allows for quality color match performance to today’s OEM finishes. Supported by a chromatically arranged color deck, the OMNI Plus system offers everything you need to perform quality and efficient refinish repairs.

Have you heard about the En-V™ EC530 clearcoat?

Did you know that the new ENIVROBASE® High Performance En-V EC530 clearcoat has 3 specially formulated temperature adjusted reducers? Based on new resin technology, EC530 is the first clearcoat to be offered that utilizes these unique reducers. The reducers will help painters "dial in" their clearcoat application based on spray room parameters and allow flexibility to paint from 1 panel to a complete overall. Additionally, painters outside of compliant areas have the choice to use these special reducers or their standard “DT” or “D” series reducers. Keep in mind too, if the repair is large (> 3 panels), consider moving to a higher temperature reducer to keep the film open longer. Either way, painters will be rewarded with a clearcoat that is easy to apply and provides superior gloss and hardness out of bake.
